Information to enrich your heritage Census records are constantly being used by genealogy researchers to add ancestors to their family trees. This session will looked beyond the first couple of columns and review the wealth of information that can be found in the US census records. It will discuss ways that you can garner each morsel of information from records from 1850 to 1940. A second area discussed will be ways of finding those missing census records. To have a more complete understanding of your family history, all census records should befound. This presentation will discuss methods to find the census records that were indexed incorrectly and now are “missing” when using normal search methods. The presentation will also discuss ways to deal with the lack of information in the census records for 1790 through 1840 and give you ways that may help you identify which records belong to your family.

Some secrets go with our ancestors to the grave while others are eventually exposed. Why do we feel the need to hold these family secrets? What can we learn about our past that will help us in the present and the generations to come? What records are available and what can you learn to sort out these family secrets? In this lecture learn what the records can tell you, even if you were not looking for it.

North Suburban Genealogy Society Meeting January 11, 2014

The North Suburban Genealogical Society’s January meeting will feature  Dr. Daniel Hubbard presenting: When Life Becomes A Myth: History, Myth and Family Stories.

This is a talk about the reconstruction of a life. An odd and dramatic family tale showed a life slowly being converted to myth over generations. Using genealogy and history to reconstruct what seems to have happened revealed a life that was not so far from the story line of a myth from the very beginning. In the end, it has come full circle from story to research to storytelling.

The society meets at the Northbrook History Museum (1776 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL).   Guests are welcome and are invited to bring a friend and enjoy refreshments.

The meeting will be held Saturday, January 11 and begins at 1:00 PM. It is free and open to the public.  Refreshments are served. The meeting room is handicap accessible.

You can view the society’s 2014 list of programs here.
